For Edit/View, I think it's better off leaving the soft-key to toggle. I actually think the soft-key is nicer than the desktop approach, but that's a benefit of having a dedicated button available.
As for Home/Back/Forward... hmmm - interesting idea. I'll have a think about it - if there is a way to do it nicely without losing too much screen space.
